Mental Health in Kenya from whispers to awareness

There are currently 81 psychiatrists for a population of 41.6 million Kenyans. Most of these are in private practice with around 25 psychiatrists located in the public sector and even then are concentrated within urban areas. Quite frankly, the treatment gap on mental health in Kenya is dire.

Every dawn, women around the world arise to go about their daily routines and they all have different stories to tell at dusk. When the sun sets on them, some are glad the day is over, others let the sun sink into the horizon with their sorrows, and hope to live or not to live another dawn, depending on the story. Life goes by, a day at a time, slowly translates into a year, and another year.

Parliament recently approved an amendment to the Constitution to convert the Equalisation Fund into an appendage of the Constituency Development Fund. In moving the amendment, its sponsor, Honorable Lelelit said (according to The Star) that it is “wrong for CRA to assume that marginalized areas have to be counties.”
